What to expect on your British Columbia road test
ICBC runs road tests in B.C. Depending on the community, your test may start at an ICBC driver licensing office, a Service BC centre, a road-test-only site, or a local insurance broker that acts as ICBC’s licensing agent.
One road test for new drivers (since October 19, 2026)
- Learner (L). You take the Class 7 road test to move to the novice licence. The earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence.
- Novice (N). You no longer take a second road test. Instead, ICBC does a Driving Record Assessment. You’re eligible after 24 months of safe driving if you’re under 25 (18 months if you completed an approved GLP course as a learner), or 12 months if you’re 25 or older. You also need no convictions for excessive speed or electronic device use, and no prohibitions or suspensions, in that time. A 12-month restriction period follows.
- To upgrade, visit an ICBC driver licensing office (not a Service BC location or licensing agent) by appointment or as a walk-in, and choose “Driving Record Assessment” when booking.
Booking
- Where: book online through ICBC’s road test booking page, or by phone at 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free.
- When: spring and summer are busy, so book well ahead. Earlier slots open up as people cancel, and calling doesn’t get you different times from booking online.
- Standby tests: some offices offer standby road tests if your schedule is flexible and you don’t mind waiting at the office.
- Cancelling: give 48 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule, or you pay a $25 fee.
- Owe ICBC money? Outstanding debt can affect your licence upgrade, so call Account Services first (604-661-2723 or 1-800-665-6442).
- Booking sites: book only through ICBC. Third-party booking sites aren’t affiliated with ICBC.
On test day
- Arrive 15 minutes early.
- Bring: the same ID you used for your learner’s licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner’s licence, and payment for the test fee.
- Your vehicle: safe, insured and registered, with a Canadian plate (you’ll give the plate number at the counter).
- During the test: GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren’t allowed. Turn off driver-assistance features if you can.
- In the car: only you and the examiner. No passengers, translators, children or pets (guide and service dogs are allowed).
- Examiner’s gender: you can ask for a driver examiner of a particular gender when you check in, with no reason needed. If ICBC can’t arrange it that day, you can reschedule with no late-cancellation fee.
During the test
Your examiner explains the manoeuvres before you start, then stays quiet except to give directions. They won’t try to trick you. Expect a hazard perception part, where you call out hazards you see, such as blind driveways.
ICBC’s examiners suggest practicing parallel parking, parking on hills, and two- and three-point turns. Keep to the posted limit rather than the speed of traffic, and watch school and playground zones: speeding through them is a common reason for failing. Shoulder-check before right turns, and scan every intersection, even on a green light.
