What to expect on your Nova Scotia road test
Nova Scotia’s road tests are run by the Registry of Motor Vehicles at Access Nova Scotia locations that offer driver examination and testing. Smaller communities have part-time sites that test only on certain days. A Class 5 road test takes about 30 minutes and costs $52.54, including HST.
Graduated licensing stages
- Learner’s licence.
- Passengers: only your supervising driver, who must not be in the graduated licence system themselves.
- Zero blood alcohol.
- You need at least 12 months of practice before the road test, or 9 months if you complete a recognized driver education or training program.
- Newly licensed driver: at least two years.
- Zero blood alcohol.
- One front-seat passenger, with back-seat passengers limited to the number of seat belts.
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless a supervising driver is with you or you have a work exemption.
- To move on, you must complete a 6-hour Defensive Driving course or a recognized driver training course, and give the certificate to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
- Restricted individual: two years. Zero blood alcohol, and you can’t act as a supervising driver. After that, the graduated licence restrictions end.

What’s tested
The test covers at least 3 km, in traffic where possible. Expect:
- starting and stopping on level ground and on a hill
- left and right turns
- backing up
- following another vehicle safely
- signalling
- parallel and/or angle parking
- obeying signs, signals and road markings
- lane changes
If you don’t pass, the examiner explains why, and you can book another test from the next day. If you pass, you take the examiner’s paperwork to an Access Nova Scotia or Registry of Motor Vehicles office to upgrade your licence.
