What to expect on your New Brunswick road test
Service New Brunswick (SNB) gives road tests at its offices across the province, in English or French, whichever you choose.
Licensing stages
- Class 7, Level 1 (learner). You must hold Level 1 for at least one year before the passenger vehicle road test, or eight months if you completed a recognized driver education course (bring your green certificate). The waiting period doesn’t apply if you can prove you were fully licensed before, in any jurisdiction.
- Class 7, Level 2. Passing the road test moves you to Level 2.
- Class 5. You can apply after at least 24 months in Levels 1 and 2 combined, with at least 12 months in Level 2.
Test results are valid for six months, so finish your licence upgrade within six months of starting the process.
Booking
Book online through SNB’s Driver Examination Online Booking Service, or call TeleServices at 1-888-762-8600 (Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). The road test fee is $25 plus HST for each attempt. Offices close on statutory holidays, so check SNB’s closures page before booking around a long weekend.
On test day
Bring paper copies of everything; only your proof of insurance can be digital. If anything is missing, you’ll be turned away.
- a licensed driver with at least three years of experience and a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) licence to come with you
- your valid learner’s permit
- a signed, valid vehicle registration
- proof of valid insurance for the vehicle
- your driving school certificate, if you have one
- proof of payment for the road test
If you hold a foreign licence and haven’t exchanged it yet, arrive at least 45 minutes early to process the exchange and pay the fees.
During and after the test
At the start, the examiner walks you through the road test, tells you the directions in advance, and gives you time to ask questions. At the end, they summarize how you did, review any errors, answer your questions, and tell you whether you passed or need to retake the test. Each new attempt has its own fee.
