What to expect on your Saskatchewan road test
SGI runs driver testing in Saskatchewan at its driver exam offices. Exam offices are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and Saturdays in Regina and Saskatoon. Road test appointments in smaller centres are reserved for local residents.
Graduated Driver Licensing stages
- Class 7 learner: 9 months.
- Age 16, or 15 in a high school program.
- Mandatory driver education: 30 hours in class plus 6 in the car through high school, or 6 plus 6 with a commercial instructor.
- A supervising driver must be in the front seat at all times.
- Between midnight and 5 a.m., other passengers must be immediate family.
- Class 5 Novice 1: 6 months, after you pass the Class 5 road test. Only one passenger who isn’t immediate family.
- Class 5 Novice 2: 12 months, which must be free of at-fault collisions, traffic convictions and suspensions. Then you graduate to an experienced licence.
At every stage: zero alcohol or drugs, no more passengers than seat belts, and no cellphone use at all, hand-held or hands-free. You also can’t drive a right-hand-drive vehicle.
Booking
Book Class 5 road tests online with MySGI, through a motor licence issuer, or by calling 1-844-TLK-2SGI (1-844-855-2744). If you give your cellphone number, SGI texts you a confirmation plus reminders 24 hours and one hour before. If you miss a test without cancelling, you pay for the rescheduled one.
On test day
- When you arrive: park and turn the car off, stay in it, and text “Here” if you signed up for texts. Keep your phone on with the ringer or vibrate on, and have your photo ID ready.
- The examiner calls you at your appointment time with a few questions, then comes out to meet you.
- Your supervising driver waits in the waiting room, not the parking lot.
- In the car: no pets or passengers.
- Driver education: if your training isn’t on your SGI file, bring your Driver Education Certificate.
Your test is rescheduled if:
- you’re late
- you haven’t held your Class 7 for nine months, or can’t prove you’ve done driver education
- you don’t have the right licence, or haven’t paid the fee
- you don’t meet the vision or medical standards
- your vehicle is unsafe
The examiner inspects the vehicle first. These must all work:
- horn, signal lights, brake lights, and headlights, wipers and defrost (as needed)
- seat belts and airbags, and the speedometer
- the driver’s and front passenger’s doors
You also need a valid rear licence plate, and a windshield without obstructing cracks, stickers or tint (and no aftermarket tint on the front side windows). The car should be clean and free of strong odours. If your windshield is cracked, ask an examiner at your local office to look at it before test day.
What’s tested
- obeying road signs, traffic signs and signals
- spotting potential hazards early
- backing up, parallel parking and two-point turns
- lane driving and shoulder checks
- starting, stopping and turning
- controlled and uncontrolled intersections
- speed choice and steering
Your examiner may score you on paper or on a tablet.
