What to expect on your Alberta road test
In Alberta, passenger vehicle road tests (Class 5) are given by private driver examiners who work through registry agents. That’s why every centre on this page is a registry office. Each registry sets its own road test fee, up to the maximum in the province’s Registry Agent Product Catalogue, and must publish its fees online.
Licensing stages
- Class 7 learner’s licence. You can drive only with someone over 18 who holds a full Class 5 licence and sits in the front passenger seat. You can’t drive between midnight and 5 a.m., you must have zero alcohol, you can’t carry more people than there are seat belts, and 8 demerit points means a suspension.
- Class 5-GDL (probationary). You can take the road test after at least one year on your Class 7, from age 16. After you pass the road test and a vision test at a registry, you get a temporary licence, and your card arrives within about 21 business days. On the GDL licence: zero alcohol or drugs, no more people than seat belts, suspension at 8 demerit points, no Class 1 to 4 upgrades, and you can’t supervise a learner.
- Full Class 5. After at least two years on the GDL licence, at age 18 or older, with no suspensions or demerits in the last 12 months, you can upgrade to a full licence. A driver training course from a licensed Alberta school can shorten the two years by up to six months.
Booking
Use alberta.ca’s map of registries that offer road tests. Each listing links to that registry’s own booking page, and the “Official booking” button on each centre page here goes straight to it. You’ll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence. Any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid before you can book.
On test day
Your registry gives you a road test information sheet covering eligibility, vehicle requirements, the documents to bring, fees, and its cancellation and no-show rules, so read it before you go. Your vehicle must meet all legal and safety requirements; your confirmation letter has the details.
How the test is marked
Examiners add points when you:
- miss a driving skill, such as a mirror or blind-spot check
- break a rule of the road, such as not obeying a sign or making an incorrect turn
- do a manoeuvre poorly, such as signalling too early or too late, or driving too aggressively or too hesitantly
More than 75 points on the Class 5 test is a fail. Endangering a pedestrian or another driver, driving unsafely or breaking a traffic law is an automatic fail.
