Local tips

The Alberta Motor Association office in Fort McMurray is at 4 Hospital St, and four-lane Hospital Street passes only about 30 metres from the door. Hours vary, so phone 780-715-3109 before your visit, and keep in mind that road tests are by appointment. Two schools are close by: Our Lady of the Rivers Catholic School about 230 metres away and Dr. K.A. Clark School about 395 metres away, so watch for students on weekdays. The Northern Lights Regional Health Centre is about 460 metres from the office, which means ambulances may appear at any time; check your mirrors and be ready to pull over. Expect plenty of signals too, with 23 sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 140 metres away. Our 15.9 km practice route loops through Hospital Street, Franklin Avenue, Father Mercredi Street and Fitzgerald Avenue, then takes the Highway 63 ramp and returns along Responders Way and Clearwater Drive. It also passes through a roundabout onto Clearwater Drive, so practice yielding to traffic already in it and signalling your exit.

Common questions

Fort McMurray road test FAQ

What are the hours at Fort McMurray?

Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Alberta Motor Association (AMA) - Fort McMurray at 780-715-3109 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.

How do I book a road test?

Book online through Alberta Motor Association (AMA) - Fort McMurray's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.

What do I need for the road test?

A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.

How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?

You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.

Is a practice route available for Fort McMurray?

Yes. This page has a 15.9 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
