Local tips

Canmore Registry, at Suite 119 - 104 Kananaskis Way, packs roundabouts, rail crossings and a fast highway into a small area. Phone 403-678-9320 to confirm hours, which vary, and remember road tests are by appointment. Map data shows four roundabouts about 205 to 225 m away. Yield to vehicles already in the circle and signal before you leave it. Railway level crossings lie about 280 to 340 m from the office; slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The Trans-Canada Highway, posted at 110 km/h, is about 455 m away, and Bow Valley Trail is about 105 m off at 50 km/h. With 135 marked crosswalks in the area, expect plenty of pedestrians. The Canmore Fire Hall is about 620 m away, so be ready to pull over. Our 34.8 km practice route follows Kananaskis Way North and Bow Valley Trail to Highway 1, then Three Sisters Parkway, Drygras Gate and Fitzgerald Rise, later returning through Railway Avenue, 17 Street, Rundle Drive and Fairholme Drive. Treat each roundabout on Three Sisters Parkway as practice in counting exits before you enter.

Common questions

Canmore Registry road test FAQ

What are the hours at Canmore Registry?

Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Canmore Registry at 403-678-9320 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.

How do I book a road test?

Book online through Canmore Registry's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.

What do I need for the road test?

A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.

How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?

You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.

Is a practice route available for Canmore Registry?

Yes. This page has a 34.8 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
