Local tips

St. Albert's Alberta Motor Association office is at 200 - 665 St. Albert Trail, about 60 metres from St. Albert Trail itself, a five-lane section of Highway 2 posted at 60 km/h. Sturgeon Community Hospital is about 210 metres away, so ambulances may appear at any time; check your mirrors often and be ready to pull over. Villeneuve Road, about 180 metres away, has a lower 40 km/h limit, so watch your speed as you turn onto it. Map data shows roundabouts about 345 metres and 925 metres from the office; yield to traffic already circling and signal your exit. There are also 27 sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 175 metres away. École Alexandre-Taché is about 425 metres away. Hours vary, so call 780-418-8930 to confirm, and keep in mind that road tests are by appointment. Our 42.6 km practice route starts on Erin Ridge Road, passes through several roundabouts on Villeneuve Road, then uses Hogan Road, Giroux Road, St. Albert Trail and Ray Gibbon Drive. It is excellent practice for back-to-back roundabouts and choosing the correct exit.

Common questions

St. Albert road test FAQ

What are the hours at St. Albert?

Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Alberta Motor Association (AMA) - St. Albert at 780-418-8930 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.

How do I book a road test?

Book online through Alberta Motor Association (AMA) - St. Albert's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.

What do I need for the road test?

A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.

How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?

You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.

Is a practice route available for St. Albert?

Yes. This page has a 42.6 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
