Local tips

Railway level crossings sit about 225 m and 310 m from Onoway Registries at 4912 50 St, with another about 1.3 km away. Each time you approach one, slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. Two fire stations are close as well, about 195 m and 215 m away, so be ready to pull to the right and stop for a fire truck. Onoway Junior/Senior High School (about 490 m) and Onoway Elementary School (about 605 m) are both nearby, so expect students on weekdays. Map data shows no traffic lights within a kilometre of the registry, so you'll decide right-of-way yourself at most intersections. Road tests are by appointment, and since hours vary, call 780-967-5270 to confirm. Our 59.5 km practice route heads north to St. Anne Trail, then 49 Street and 47 Avenue, before a long rural loop on Range Road 21, Township Road 544, Range Road 20 and Township Road 541, which is part of Highway 633. Practice scanning far ahead on the range roads and slowing early for each turn.

Common questions

Onoway Registries road test FAQ

What are the hours at Onoway Registries?

Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Onoway Registries at 780-967-5270 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.

How do I book a road test?

Book online through Onoway Registries's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.

What do I need for the road test?

A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.

How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?

You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.

Is a practice route available for Onoway Registries?

Yes. This page has a 59.5 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
