Local tips
Gibbons Registries, at 4806 50 AVE, is practically next door to the fire hall: map data shows fire stations about 35 and 50 metres away. If you hear sirens or see flashing lights, signal, pull to the right and stop until the truck has passed. Railway tracks are the other key feature, with four level crossings between about 270 and 475 metres from the registry. Slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. Gibbons School is about 205 metres away, so take extra care with students on weekdays. Highway 28A, about 335 metres away, has four lanes and an 80 km/h limit. Registry hours vary, so call 780-923-2393 to check, and note that road tests are by appointment. Our 52.4 km practice route sets out on 50 Avenue, then uses Township Road 562, Sunnyside Road, Township Road 554 and Highway 28A before returning through town on 49 Street and 48 Avenue. On Highway 28A, practice keeping a safe following distance and checking your mirrors before every lane change.
Common questions
Gibbons Registries road test FAQ
What are the hours at Gibbons Registries?
Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Gibbons Registries at 780-923-2393 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.
How do I book a road test?
Book online through Gibbons Registries's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.
What do I need for the road test?
A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.
How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?
You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.
Is a practice route available for Gibbons Registries?
Yes. This page has a 52.4 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
