Local tips

The Alberta Motor Association office at 11401 99 St in Grande Prairie sits close to the tracks, with railway level crossings about 205 and 215 m away and another about 640 m away. Slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. Traffic lights are everywhere here: map data counts 34 sets within a kilometre, the nearest about 100 m from the office, so watch each signal early and be ready for a stale yellow. There are also 24 marked crosswalks within 800 m, and the Grande Prairie Fire Department is about 845 m away, so be ready to pull over for emergency vehicles. 99 Street passes about 70 m from the building. Hours aren't the same at every registry, so call 780-831-7181 to check before you go, and remember road tests are by appointment. Our 7.8 km practice route is short: it runs along 99 Street, 99 Avenue and 100 Avenue, then 92 Street, 104 Avenue and 112 Avenue before returning by 88 Street and 116 Avenue. Drive it a few times so the lights and turns feel familiar.

Common questions

Grande Prairie road test FAQ

What are the hours at Grande Prairie?

Alberta doesn't publish hours for each registry, and they vary. Call Alberta Motor Association (AMA) - Grande Prairie at 780-831-7181 to confirm before you go. Road tests are by appointment.

How do I book a road test?

Book online through Alberta Motor Association (AMA) - Grande Prairie's road test booking page (the "Official booking" button on this page, also listed on alberta.ca), or in person at the registry. You'll need your 9-digit MVID number, printed near the barcode on your licence, and any outstanding Government of Alberta fines must be paid first. Registry agents set their own road test fees, up to the maximum in the province's Registry Agent Product Catalogue, so confirm the fee when you book.

What do I need for the road test?

A vehicle that meets all legal and safety requirements, plus the documents listed on the registry's road test information sheet and in your confirmation letter. The information sheet also covers eligibility, fees, and the registry's cancellation and no-show policies.

How long do I need my learner's licence first, and how is the test marked?

You must have held a Class 7 learner's licence for at least one year and be at least 16 (with a parent's or guardian's written consent if you're under 18). You fail the Class 5 road test with more than 75 points, or automatically if you endanger someone, drive unsafely or break traffic laws. After you pass the road test and a vision test, you get a probationary Class 5-GDL licence, which you hold for at least two years.

Is a practice route available for Grande Prairie?

Yes. This page has a 7.8 km Class 5 practice test route that starts and ends at the centre, with a map and turn-by-turn directions.
