Local tips

Chipman's driver examination office is at 10 Civic Court, in the village office building. It's open weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. The thing to know about Chipman is the railway: map data shows level crossings only about 110 and 120 metres from the office, with another about 610 metres away. Slow down as you approach, look both ways, and never stop on the tracks. Our 54.2 km practice route follows King Street, Main Street and Bridge Street (Route 10) out of the village, then loops through the countryside on Midland Road and Post Road. It comes back along Route 10 and Pleasant Drive. It's a long route, so practice keeping a steady speed on rural roads, slowing early for curves, and watching for farm vehicles and wildlife. Coming back into the 50 km/h village streets, cut your speed well before the first houses. Chipman Elementary School is about 1.3 kilometres from the office.

Common questions

Chipman road test FAQ

What are the hours at Chipman?

Service New Brunswick lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Offices close on statutory holidays, so check snb.ca before you go.

How do I book a road test?

Book online through Service New Brunswick's Driver Examination Online Booking Service (linked from gnb.ca's Driver licence testing page), or call TeleServices at 1-888-762-8600 (Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.). The road test fee is $25 plus HST for each attempt, and you can take the test in English or French.

What do I need to bring?

A licensed driver with at least three years of experience and a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) licence to come with you, your valid learner's permit, a signed and valid vehicle registration, proof of valid insurance for the vehicle, your driving school certificate if you have one, and proof of payment for the test. Bring paper copies; only the proof of insurance can be digital. If anything is missing, you'll be turned away.

How long do I need my learner's licence first, and what if I fail?

New drivers take this road test to move from Class 7 Level 1 (learner) to Level 2. You must have held Level 1 for at least one year, or eight months if you completed a recognized driver education course (green certificate required). The wait is waived if you've been fully licensed before. If you don't pass, you book and pay for another attempt.
