Local tips

John Paul II Catholic School is only about 100 m from the Port Alberni Service BC Centre at 4070 8th Ave., and Alberni District Secondary School is about 600 m away. On weekdays, watch for students and school zones; ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail. ICBC doesn't list regular opening hours for this centre, only that road tests are by appointment, so check before you go. Map data shows railway level crossings about 580 m, 710 m and 880 m away; slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. There are four sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 470 m away, and the Port Alberni Fire Department is about 800 m away. Our 19.1 km practice route heads north on 8th Avenue, then uses Roger Street, Gertrude Street, Kitsuksis Road, Cherry Creek Road and Johnston Road (BC 4), later returning on Redford Street, 10th Avenue and Maitland Street. Practice scanning ahead for school-zone signs as you head out on 8th Avenue.

Common questions

Port Alberni road test FAQ

What are the hours at Port Alberni?

ICBC lists: Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
