Local tips

Stop signs are the big story around Surrey Driver Licensing (78th Ave.) at 13426 78 Avenue: map data counts 183 of them in the surrounding streets, so come to a full stop behind the line every time and look both ways before rolling on. The office is open Monday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except Wednesdays, when it opens at 9:00 a.m.; road tests are by appointment. Guru Angav Dev Elementary School is only about 200 m away. ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail, so watch your speed on weekdays. Map data also shows two railway level crossings about 580 m away: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. King George Boulevard, about 350 m away, is posted at 60 km/h. Our 12.3 km practice route heads out on 134 Street and 76 Avenue, works west along 72 Avenue and 80 Avenue, swings up 128 Street to 88 Avenue, and returns down King George Boulevard to 78 Avenue. On the long avenue stretches, practice scanning well ahead and keeping a steady speed.

Common questions

78th Ave road test FAQ

What are the hours at 78th Ave?

ICBC lists: Mon–Tue 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Wed 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Thu–Sat 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
