Local tips

Road tests only are handled at the Surrey Newton Claims Centre, 13665 68 Avenue. ICBC doesn't list regular counter hours for this location, and road tests are by appointment. Railway level crossings about 235 m and 245 m from the building, with more about 500 m out, are the first thing to prepare for: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. King George Boulevard, three lanes and posted at 50 km/h, is about 130 m away. Map data shows 55 sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 140 m off, and 184 stop signs in the surrounding streets. There are roundabouts about 530 m and 585 m away; yield to anyone already circulating and signal your exit. Our 14.1 km practice route starts on 68 Avenue and goes through a roundabout, then uses 120 Street, Nicholson Road, 84 Avenue, 128 St. and Hall Road before returning by King George Boulevard. Because the street names are numbered, practice reading signs early so you are in the right lane before each turn.

Common questions

Newton road test FAQ

What are the hours at Newton?

ICBC lists: Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
