Local tips

In Merritt, ICBC road tests are booked through Hub International Insurance Brokers, the licensing agent in unit 122 at 1700 Garcia Street, in the Railyard Mall. It's open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. Central Elementary School is about 380 m away and Merritt Secondary School about 600 m away. ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail, so keep to the school zone limit on weekdays. Map data shows eleven sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 260 m away, and a lot of stop signs and marked crosswalks in the surrounding streets, so practice coming to a complete stop behind the line and checking each crosswalk before you move off. Nicola Avenue, which carries BC 8 and BC 97C, is about 355 m away, and Merritt Fire Rescue is about 725 m from the office, so be ready to pull over for fire trucks. Our 4.6 km practice route uses Garcia Street, Coldwater Avenue and Voght Street, loops out along Lindley Creek Road, Fir Road and Morrissey Street, and comes back through Clapperton Avenue and Blair Street. It's short, so drive it more than once.

Common questions

Merritt road test FAQ

What are the hours at Merritt?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
