Local tips

The Dease Lake Service BC Centre is at Block D Hwy 37 North and is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; road tests are by appointment. What stands out here is the Cassiar Highway (BC 37), about 90 m from the office and posted at 90 km/h. Turning onto a road that fast takes patience: wait for a gap large enough to get up to speed, and check your mirrors and blind spot before slowing to turn off. Map data shows no traffic lights, stop signs or marked crosswalks nearby, so you will rely on right-of-way rules at intersections. Scan both ways early and be prepared to yield. The Stikine Regional Health Centre is about 870 m away, so pull over if an ambulance comes up behind you. Our 7.9 km practice route moves between the highway and town streets, using the Cassiar Highway, Dease Lake Avenue, Boulder Street (BC 51), 4th Avenue, Stikine Street and 5th Avenue. Practice the switch from highway speed to slower streets, letting your speed come down well before each turn.

Common questions

Dease Lake road test FAQ

What are the hours at Dease Lake?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
