Local tips
Alert Bay Driver Licensing is at 15 Maple Road. It keeps short hours, open Monday to Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., and road tests are by appointment, so plan your booking around the afternoon opening. The map data for the streets around the office is fairly thin, but it does show Alert Bay Elementary School about 615 m away. ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail, so keep an eye out for students and school zone signs on weekdays. The volunteer fire department is about 585 m from the office; if you hear a siren, signal, pull over to the right and stop until the vehicle has passed. Our 8.2 km practice route leaves along Maple Road and Hemlock Street, follows Gatu Road to Boundary Road and Atli Street, then makes a sharp left onto Smittys Hill before running along Front Street and Fir Street and back by Cedar Street. Slow down well before that sharp left, check for oncoming traffic and turn into the correct lane.
Common questions
Alert Bay road test FAQ
What are the hours at Alert Bay?
ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 12:00 p.m.–4:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.
How do I book a road test?
Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.
What do I need to bring?
Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.
When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?
New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
Is a practice route available for Alert Bay?
