Local tips

A railway level crossing just about 120 m from the Hub International Insurance Brokers (HCW) office at 605 Columbia Avenue is the first thing to prepare for in Castlegar, with another about 585 m away. Slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. The office is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. Several schools are close: one about 345 m away, Stanley Humphries Secondary about 415 m and Twin Rivers Elementary about 465 m, so watch for students and school zones on weekdays. ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail. The Castlegar and District Community Health Centre is about 765 m away, and map data counts 99 stop signs nearby. Our 16.6 km practice route goes from 6th Street onto Columbia Avenue, takes the ramp toward Cranbrook/Nelson, then follows Columbia Road, Lark Road, McPhee Road, Ootischenia Road and Highway 3A. Practice building speed smoothly on the ramp.

Common questions

Castlegar road test FAQ

What are the hours at Castlegar?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 8:30 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Sat 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
