Local tips

Smooth stops and steady starts matter around the Prince George Service BC Centre at 1044 - 5th Ave. The office is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and road tests are by appointment. Map data counts 51 sets of traffic lights within a kilometre, the nearest about 100 m away, so practice reading lights early and stopping behind the line rather than in the crosswalk. 4th Avenue, about 95 m away, is posted at 50 km/h, and 1st Avenue, part of the Yellowhead Highway with four lanes, is about 435 m from the door. The Wood Innovation & Design Center, a college, sits about 50 m away, and map data shows 34 marked crosswalks in the surrounding streets, so expect people on foot. Railway level crossings begin about 765 m out: slow down, look both ways and never stop on the tracks. Our 17.1 km practice route takes Queensway to the Yellowhead Highway, then Davis Road, South Ospika Boulevard, 15th Avenue and South Tabor Boulevard before coming back along 5th Avenue. Use the highway stretch to practice holding a steady speed and checking mirrors before changing lanes.

Common questions

5th Ave road test FAQ

What are the hours at 5th Ave?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
