Local tips

Saanich Driver Licensing, at 1- 1150 McKenzie Ave. in the Victoria area, is open Monday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., starting later at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesdays. Road tests are by appointment. Reynolds Secondary is only about 295 m from the office, so school-zone speeds deserve extra attention on weekdays; ICBC's examiners say speeding through school and playground zones is a common reason people fail. McKenzie Avenue, about 75 m away, has five lanes and is posted at 50 km/h, while Cedar Hill Cross Road, about 240 m out, drops to 40 km/h. Watch the signs so you catch that change. The nearest of nine traffic lights is about 95 m away, and a roundabout lies about 610 m from the office. Our 18.3 km practice route uses Cedar Hill Cross Road and Borden Street, then follows McKenzie Avenue and Admirals Road west to Colville Road, Lampson Street and Craigflower Road, before returning by Bay Street and Cook Street. On five-lane McKenzie, practice choosing your lane early and checking your blind spot before every move.

Common questions

McKenzie Ave road test FAQ

What are the hours at McKenzie Ave?

ICBC lists: Mon–Tue 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Wed 9:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m.; Thu–Sat 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
