Local tips

Golden's road tests are booked through Western Financial Group at 511 - 9th Ave. N, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with road tests by appointment. Golden and District Hospital is about 385 m from the office and Golden Fire Rescue about 825 m, so be ready to pull over and stop for ambulances or fire trucks. 10th Avenue North (BC 95) runs about 95 m away, and the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH 1), about 240 m away, is posted at 60 km/h. A bridge on 10th Avenue South is about 270 m away, a roundabout about 900 m, and a group of railway level crossings about 1.2 km away; at the tracks, slow down, look both ways and never stop on them. Our 11.0 km practice route goes up 9th Avenue North and 7th Street North to Kicking Horse Drive, then takes BC 95, Reflection Lake Road, Spruce Drive and 10th Street South. A few turns on the route have no street names, so practice reading signs early and signalling in good time.

Common questions

Golden road test FAQ

What are the hours at Golden?

ICBC lists: Mon–Fri 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Road tests by appointment. Check icbc.com before you go, especially around holidays.

How do I book a road test?

Book online at icbc.com (Book a road test), or call 604-982-2250 in Metro Vancouver, 250-978-8300 in Victoria, or 1-800-950-1498 toll-free; in other areas you can also contact the nearest driver licensing office. You pay the road test fee when you arrive. Cancel or reschedule at least 48 hours ahead, or you'll be charged a $25 fee.

What do I need to bring?

Arrive 15 minutes early with the same ID you used for your learner's licence (one primary and one secondary piece), your learner's licence, payment for the road test fee, and a safe, reliable, insured vehicle with a Canadian licence plate and its registration papers. GPS and navigation must be off, and recording devices aren't allowed during the test.

When can I take the road test, and is there a second test?

New drivers take the Class 7 road test to move from the learner (L) licence to the novice (N) licence; the earliest date you can take it is printed on your licence. Since October 19, 2026, drivers with a novice licence and a clean record no longer take a second road test: a Driving Record Assessment replaces it.
